What is for you the best free blog host?

February 13th, 2012

A typical question:

I know that this has been asked a lot, but what is the best free blog host on the web? WordPress.com, Blogger…??
Thanks Vincent! What do you think of inkfeeds.com?

Answer: This is a very popular question from aspiring blog and website owners. To clear the obvious, WordPress.com is the free hosting which will most probably never be the best hosting for aspiring website owner. WordPress.org is the one being used by successful website owners. However, you need a separate web hosting plan in order to use the powerful blogging system from WordPress.org

Warning! Using the WordPress hosting at WordPress.com can leave you devastated and your hard work can be deactivated in seconds because they have so many limitations including now allowing sales pitches and commercial type blogs.

Web hosting is the heart of your online presence and can mean the success and failure for your business. Do not simply pick the first web hosting service you find. Most of them are just resellers, have almost no support and very unreliable. Before we decide on which web host to use, let us review the 7 things to look for in a good WordPress hosting. An excellent hosting:

  1. lets you try their service for free or at very low price,
  2. gives more-than-enough storage,
  3. offers no limit on bandwidth,
  4. gives unlimited add-on domains,
  5. has easy-to-use Site Builder,
  6. has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install WordPress
  7. has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install other useful free apps such as Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
  8. can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their cheap dedicated server plans if and when your business require.

To answer your question, many experienced web developers suggest to try Hostgator. If you need an “unlimited” hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.

What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. They are rated A+ by Better Business Bureau which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. You also do not have to pay for the first month. You can just try their fully functional hosting service – you pay only $0.01 (you need to use the special coupon code). Do you know any other hosting company that can give you that kind of assurance? Anybody can grab an account from Hostgator for almost FREE.

Who Should Not Try Hostgator

To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. The drawbacks of Hostgator include:

  1. No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Successful bloggers will usually recommend you split the hosting of your domain and website at two different companies.
  2. You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

What about Bluehost? We believe Bluehost sucks because they have inodes limit of 50,000 which means they can suspend your account when it reaches 50k files. That is not exactly unlimited is it? That was why we moved to Hostgator and has been happy for more than 5 years.

If you are still not sure if HG is right for your WordPress needs, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just shoot them some questions before you decide.

In my opinion WordPress wins that one. It just has so many more capabilities, and though Blogger is trying to play catch up, WordPress still remains the top.

So many websites use WordPress, and sometimes people are really surprised that a website is build on WordPress. It is just so flexible you can make a fantastic website, blog and even a membership site using WordPress.

Of course, if you plan on doing anything with the blog substantial my real vote goes to a self hosted site using WordPress. Domain and hosting prices are so inexpensive these days and by using a self hosted one you add even more capabilities, have a much greater chance at being found through search engines and have an easier time getting readers.

Both of my votes go to WordPress, regardless.

I think the best FREE one is Blogger. I found WordPress.com to be limiting and Blogger can offer you more. However if you buy hosting and use WordPress.org you can do so much with it. I just pay $10.00 for my hosting. It is well worth it. But really if you want to stay free, Blogger all the way.

Been using WP since September. It’s excellent. Support forums are very helpful and it’s dead easy to use.

It’s a good service and it keeps getting better.
