Best WordPress hosting?

January 27th, 2012

A common query:

I’m planning to start a WordPress blog, but I’m not sure which hosting company to go for. Right now I’m considering either BlueHost or HostGator. Could you please offer some advice and tell me which is the best hosting company to host a WP blog?

Answer: This topic can be a confusing one. To clear the obvious, WordPress.com is the free hosting which will not be the right hosting for most people. WordPress.org is the one being used by successful website owners. However, you need a separate web hosting plan in order to use the powerful blogging system from WordPress.org

This is quite a popular question because not many people understand why WordPress.org and WordPress.com are not the same.

Web hosting is one of the most critical thing for your business and can mean the success and failure for your business. Do not simply pick the first web hosting service you find. Most of them are just resellers, have almost no support and very unreliable. Before we decide on which web host to use, let us review the 7 qualities to look for in a good WordPress hosting. An excellent hosting:

  1. has at least 30 days money back guarantee,
  2. gives unlimited diskspace,
  3. offers no limit on bandwidth,
  4. gives unlimited add-on domains,
  5. has friendly Site Builder,
  6. has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install WordPress
  7. has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install other useful free apps such as Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
  8. can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their cheap dedicated server plans if and when your business require.

Answering your question, many experienced web developers suggest to try Hostgator. If you need an “unlimited” hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.

What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. They are rated A+ by Better Business Bureau which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. You also do not have to pay for the first month. You can just try their fully functional hosting service – you pay only $0.01 (you need to use the special coupon code). Do you know any other hosting company that can give you that kind of assurance? Anybody can grab an account from Hostgator for almost FREE.

Who Should Not Try Hostgator

To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. The drawbacks of Hostgator include:

  1. No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Successful bloggers will usually recommend you split the hosting of your domain and website at two different companies.
  2. You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

What about Bluehost? We believe Bluehost sucks because they have inodes limit of 50,000 which means they can suspend your account when it reaches 50k files. That is not exactly unlimited is it? That was why we moved to Hostgator and has been happy for more than 5 years.

If you are still not sure if HG is right for your WordPress needs, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just shoot them some questions before you decide.

Both BlueHost and HostGator are good WordPress hosts, and I personally use both of them. I prefer HostGator by a thin margin, but you can’t miss with either of them.

You can also go to WordPress.org/hosting (or select the Hosting tab from WordPress.org) and they list several more.

    Good luck!

I prefer Hostgator for I’m familiar to use their Fantastico installer to install WordPress on my website. Aside from that, Hostgator supports upgrade of hosting plan from shared to dedicated server or VPS hosting which is very useful for future use.
